Happy Thanksgiving

K14 was telling me the other day, "Mom, we need to get a chimney sweep out here so we can start a fire in the fireplace." It barely gets below 40 degrees here, so fires are few and far between.

Growing up, we had a fireplace. Every year for Christmas I would buy my dad the exact same thing - a box of fireplace matches and a package of color crystals that you throw into the fire, causing the flame to turn beautiful colors. I remember us trying to pop popcorn in the fireplace popcorn popper. It was tiring to hold that thing and shake it over the fire. Once Dad had some wood sitting on the hearth, and it was full of carpenter ants. I remember that when he threw the logs into the fire, that the ants made a hissing sound. I remember feeling sorry for the ants because they were experiencing a painful death.

On Christmas Eve, dad would open the fireplace curtain and move the grate sideways so that it looked disturbed. Then he would take his shoes and put them in the ashes and walk them across the floor, making it appear that Santa had been there.

I LOVE fires in the fireplace, but I am afraid of leaving the embers unattended when we go to bed.

~Happy Thanksgiving!~

Holiday Parade

Today was our annual holiday parade. The theme was Happy 100 years to our town. K17 and K14 clogged on float #112. They looked really sharp out there!

Last night they went to a social, giving R and I some time alone. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Tonight they have a Thanksgiving feast at one of the churches, giving R and I time alone. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. They will be at my mom and dad's from Tuesday to Thanksgiving, giving -- you got it -- R and I time alone!

Tomorrow the Texans are playing, so that is couch time for me! The girls don't have any writing homework to do this weekend, but I think they have science work to do, I'm not sure.

I took K17 out of Vocabulary from the Classical Roots - it just wasn't doing the job -- and switched to a visual clue version of Wordsmart. It is the second book in a series, but got it in my resale section so I couldn't be picky.

The girls are at home making cornbread for tonight's feast. I have R working at the cash register deleting files, and I have played on my laptop all day. We got an order from Alabama yesterday. We have had a steady stream of customers today -- I didn't open until noon because of the parade -- mostly Girl Scout purchases.Dang! A man just picked up an expensive item that we NEVER sell and then decided to put it back!

Well, it's about time to close. Y'all have a nice weekend!

"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good..." Psalm 100:4, 5a

Strike Outs Below

Just a note about the post below. I was trying to be clever and strike out the word "doorstops" and it struck out the entire post. I went back to try to fix it and managed to save all but the top paragraph.

Overheard in the store today...

You'll be glad to know that Mr. Klein is already selling doorstops fruitcakes in his store. BLECH! R and I bought an apple pie and a cherry pie last night for Bible study. YUM! Problem is that hardly anyone showed up, so we had to bring half a pie of each home.

The following was overheard in the store yesterday:
Customer to employee: How do you know how much this costs?
Employee: There is a price tag.
Customer(turning the book over): Oh, okay.

A big Homer Simpson "DOH"!

Some of you know that on Wednesday, I clean toilets, 18 to be exact (including urinals). I do this as part of a homeschool co-op. It's not an exciting job, but it keeps me away from people and all the chitchat. Anyway, you can learn a lot while cleaning toilets. For instance, did you know that the toilets in the girls' restroom are yuckier than those in the boys' restroom? Also, what is the point of tearing up paper towels into miniscule pieces and throwing them on the floor RIGHT NEXT TO THE TRASHCAN? I know why. So that I will be challenged picking them up wearing living gloves. Did you know that someone makes floormats especially to put in front of urinals? Today I learned that the automatic flushing toilets actually have a red button to push to manually flush them. Guess what I have been doing for the past six weeks? Waving my arms madly like a maniac, doing everything but the Hokey Pokey to get them to flush. What an idiot.

Just between you and me, I think that Marie Osmond is going to win Dancing with the Stars simply out of popularity. She should not have made it this far. I would be curious to see the actual results of the votes to see if she is usually close to number one. If she wins I think the show is done for. I mean, why watch when you know it's just a popularity contest?

"I've learned.... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes."

OCD Joke

I stole this joke from another blog.

A Stanford Medical research group advertised for participants in astudy of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
They were looking for therapy clients who had been diagnosed with thisdisorder.
The response was gratifying; they got 3,879 responses one hour afterthe ad came out.
All from the same person.

Tee hee.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

My dad had a birthday yesterday! We are going to baby brother's house tonight to celebrate! It will be so nice to have the whole family together.

K17 got a job at Chick-Fil-A (good for her!), so that will be another place I will be driving to during the week.

I am very happy to report that my friend, Kim, had an excellent report from her oncologist this week! And she looks GREAT!

I know my last post sounded kind of depressing. This werek I feel like a new woman. I have started going to a Christian counselor (trial period) and she answered a lot of my questions. I am working on taking better care of my body, my mind, and spending more time with the family. I am even going to go to church tomorrow for the first time since December. I know that I will have setbacks (and I pray that my family will forgive me for that), but I am really going to try to make a go of it from now on. So now I am going to two counselors, but that should not be a problem because they are working on different issues. My OCD therapist will be moving away in February so I won't get to see her anymore anyway. And best of all -- this new counselor is free!

It is boring at the store today. R is on his way to bring me some lunch after he drops off K17 at a friends house. She's going to go see Dan In Real Life. K14 is hanging out at home with her BFF.

Only one order this month so far on the internet. Several people were shopping yesterday but didn't check out. Someone is shopping right now from PA - she has a whopping $3.90 in her shopping cart! The webmaster has assured us that even though this is considered to be our slow season, Google is continuing to increase the amount of people it sends here.

Went out for margaritas with E last night. Was so nice to get out, eat chips and pico de gallo, drink and talk for 2 1/2 hours.

Well, take care all. I don't have the creativity today to leave you with a quote.

LIFE

Everywhere I go I see these strange creatures. They walk, they talk, they laugh, they smile, they enjoy life. Oh, wait! Those are people! I used to be one of those. :o(

Dumbledore

With all the talk about Dumbledore being gay, I'm beginning to wonder what is the big deal? I mean, gay people exist; my kids know they exist. Jesus loves them just as much as he loves you and me. As long as it wasn't referenced in the books, I don't see much to worry about. Guess I'm getting to be more liberal than I thought. Now, the fan fiction, that could be a problem. But who of us reading this blog allow our children to read fan fiction anyway? J.K. Rowling is just trying to draw attention back to her books so those who haven't will go out and buy the books and look for the nuances in them. More money for her, which is her right, I suppose.
I got the go ahead from the web people to upload all 11,000 items to the website as soon as I am ready, pictures, descriptions, or not. This will probably entail about three weeks of work for me, I am guessing.
Tonight R and I are going to dinner at the Vietnamese restaurant with some friends. K17 is going to youth group; K14 is staying home to rest from the party she held last night.

Last Day of September

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM IF SHE'S WATCHING!
TODAY, ON THE LAST DAY OF SEPTEMBER, WE MADE ANOTHER INTERNET SALE, AND WE HAD ALL THREE ITEMS IN STOCK!!! A $48 SALE IS NOT A LOT TO BRAG ABOUT, BUT IT IS A SALE! AND IT WAS FROM A REPEAT CUSTOMER, WHICH MEANS SHE MUST HAVE LIKED OUR SERVICE ON HER LAST ORDER! WE HAVE NOW HAD ORDERS FROM TEXAS, CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA, OKLAHOMA, KANSAS, AND NORTH CAROLINA. I HAVE PUT A MAP ON THE WALL, AND WE ARE STICKING PUSH PINS IN THE STATES AS WE RECEIVE ORDERS.
Had a bad panic attack on Tuesday (I happened to be driving at the time) and ended up going to my friend K's house. (Thanks, K!) It came on so suddenly, but if I look back, I remember it building up. Wish I could remember those feelngs for a warning for next time.
K17 and K14 went to what is equivalent to a homeschool student council meeting last night and did some planning for the group's activities. Tonight K17 will be meeting some friends at ITs, a popular local arcade, while K14 is going to youth group at a different church. Richard is riding into Huntsville with a friend to hear a preacher who is on TV. I guess I'll cancel dinner for tonight. I was going to make sloppy joes, but no one but me, myself, and I will be home to eat them. Guess it will be a nice, quiet evening at home with me and my doggie, who, by the way, is smidgeons away from being housebroken (FINALLY!). She will be 2 years old on October 18th!
Tomorrow I plan to clean some of the house and go get my nails done. My nails look like they are right out of a horror film!
Well, I will sign off for now as I listen to the steady hum of customers browsing (and I do mean browsing - not buying) in the store. One customer was in for 1 1/2 hours and only bought two posters and an eraser. Oh, well, every penny counts!
~bye~

Volleyball Game

K17's team did great today! I felt so sorry for the other team. First, they didn't have many parents there, I suspect because they were from so far away. BUT the parents that were there did not clap or cheer for their team. I felt so bad for them.
K14 is having her first guitar lesson tonight with my brother. Got her a beginner book, but she will need some thin guitar picks, he says.
Got the girls a Pride and Prejudice (motion picture version) piano book. I'm glad because I'm sort of getting tired of Phantom of the Opera songs.
Below is my menu for the month:
Monday – roast, meatloaf, quiche, lasagna
Roast and meatloaf served with potatoes and veggie; quiche and lasagna served with salad

Tuesday – chef salad, taco salad, grilled chicken salad, tuna/chicken salad
Tuna/chicken salad served with canned fruit and crackers

Wednesday – Chicken teryaki, turkey roast, roasted chicken, chicken stir fry
Served with rice and corn

Friday – potato soup, taco soup, chicken noodle soup, chili
Served with crackers, muffins, or cornbread

Saturday – catfish, salmon, fish sticks, salmon patties
Served with pasta and peas

Saturday – sloppy joes, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked potatos

Shopping Carts

I've noticed that there are about twenty-five or thirty people who have visited our website, put items in their shopping carts, and then never checked out. I added them up and came up with $1515.47. I sure could use that money right now. Glad people don't keep their items in baskets all over my store

Today is a sad day. I have one friend who is not speaking to me, one who is barely speaking to me, and one whom I've lost completely. I thank God for the remaining friends that I do have. Y'all are WONDERFUL!

Thoughts on OCD

Sometimes I think back in my life, remembering people I've known and wondering if maybe they had a touch of OCD, not that anyone can have "a touch" of it. I remember one friend in college who some would call strange for many things she did. One thing she did drove me nuts. She would stay up until 3 or 4 a.m. doing laundry. How can one person have that much laundry? I remember that she would wash each individual pair of panties by hand, using Spray and Wash and dishwashing liquid. Then she would wring each one out by hand, like she was going to hang them up or something; and then she would put them in the washing machine and run them in there with more detergent. The whole process lasted at least an hour.

I saw a man in our parking lot a while back that I thought for sure must have had OCD. He pulled his car up, got out in front of the grocery store, got a large sponge out of his trunk and began to scrub his entire car, wheels and all, top to bottom. When he was done, he put the sponge away and went into the grocery store.

I had to laugh, but, actually, OCD is not that very funny. Some people are confined to their homes because of it. Considering that I have what has been termed a "severe" case of it, I am very blessed that I am as high-functioning as I am. I am able to hide a lot of my rituals, and, plus, most of my OCD goes on in my head, which is why it is so difficult to treat. Rituals are easier to treat because they are concrete.

Lots of Girl Scouts coming in the store today for uniforms. I have had one return so far in thirty minutes. It was something I wasn't supposed to take back (a workbook), but, hey, she caught me on a good day. One customer is bummed because we are out of EZ Graders. One lady came in and dumped off a whole bunch of math books she didn't want anymore.

Well, I have LOTS of work to do. Please pray that we get some more internet orders and that we are able to fill them.

Today's quote is from the Cosby Show:

Cliff takes women's underwear out among Theo's laundry)
Cliff: All of this isn't Theo's.
Rudy: That's definitely not Theo's!
Cliff: Is this yours?
Rudy: That's not mine! I'm not that mature yet.

Long Time No See

Haven't talked to you guys in awhile. It has been crazy here. Got 659 more items ready to go up on the website.
So what else is going on in my life? We had a very large order come in last weekend from California. Unfortunately, we kind of messed up on our end and the guy had to send some of it back. We ended up overnighting him the correct books, which was more money out of our pockets. Oh, well, live and learn.
K14 accidentally died her hair pink; well, not the whole head, only blotches and the roots. If you ever need to get dye out, go to Walgreen's and buy Color Oops!! It worked wonders.
My friend L read my book in one night. Amazing! She said it kept her interest, so that was a good comment.
We are up at the store. It is almost five and the girls still have schoolwork to do. Going to Old Navy and Kohl's after work. Then home for dinner-salmon patties. Tomorrow night is baked potatoes and Sunday is roast. I will post next month's menu soon.
K17 is doing great in volleyball, but her toe isn't. She has to have the toenail removed in a couple of weeks.
Life is humming along as usual at the K house. I enjoy reading your blogs. I notice some of you are like me and don't get the chance to write much.
"Is it real?" No, the freckles and blond eyebrows also were apart of the hair dye kit.

My Sunday

Today the girls and I went to the mall for some shopping and female bonding. K14 bought two shirts and a pair of bermuda shorts; K17 bought a shirt. Then we went to Academy to get K17 some shoes for volleyball, which she has tomorrow. K14 and I will travel a ways to visit with Mom and Dad while K17 is practicing.

I have two orders to do and don't know when I will have time to do them. I promised K17 that we could watch the second disc of 24 tonight.
Above is a picture of K17. Isn't she beautiful?

Menu planning

Praise God! I knew it would happen! Someone came in and put the Apologia Physical Science on consignment. Woohoo! Now each girl has their own science book, making school day much easier.

Here is a rotating menu I made for September. There are four Mondays, four Tuesdays, etc. Hoping to add soups to October's menu.

Monday - meatballs & rice, spaghetti, lasagna, baked spaghetti
Served with garlic bread and green beans

Tuesday - chef salad, taco salad, grilled chicken salad, tuna/chicken salad
Tuna/chicken salad serverd with canned fruit and crackers

Wednesday - grilled chicken, chicken teriyaki, turkey roast, chicken stir fry
served with rice and corn

Friday - catfish, salmon, fish sticks, salmon patties
served with pasta and peas

Saturday - sloppy joes, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked potatoes
first three served with french fries

Sunday - roast, pork chops, tacos, breakfast casserole
first three served with potatoes or rice; casserole served with biscuits and turkey bacon

This is a new sway of planning meals which I discovered this week. Hope it will help me get organized. Now I just need to get back to my Motivated Moms organizer. Don't know if that will ever happen! There are just not going to be enough hours in a day, especially if I am working on the website!

Car CRASH!

Today I took K14 to the eye doctor for an exam and to be fitted with different contact lenses.

Last night I did a totally brilliant thing - I walked into a parked car - BLAM! Man, did that ever hurt! I am still sore today. It was pitch dark. I was trying to walk AROUND the car, but missed.

I think I've gotten most of the school work organized. I still need to plan some of K17's history and look through their science book to match lessons with the CD. (This is Apologia I'm talking about.)

I've been going to some new blogs this week - Mom21's and Momster. If you have a blog that you would like me to visit, just let me know.

This Week's Menu

This week's menu in no particular order:
Taco salad - lettuce, taco meat, tomatoes, tortilla chips, corn, black beans, cheese, sour cream, and picante sauce.
Pork Chops made with Shake and Bake like Mom used to make
Lasagne and salad
Chicken Stir Fry with Rice
Spaghetti if I still need an Italian fix
Thursday night is eating out, probably at Panera Bread for Caesar salads

Butter vs. Margarine ? I trust cows over scientists.

Order from France

Man, is it ever hot here! The A/C in the store is still not fixed.

Someone from France tried to order from our website today. I thought that was neat that out of millions of websites they were directed to ours! That is GOOD news! I had to apologetically e-mail said customer and let them know that, unfortunately, we do not ship to France.

Reluctantly, I am going to have to add spelling as a subject this year. I have chosen Rod & Staff 7th grade spelling, unless I find something better at the conference on Friday. Can you believe it? I am going to a conference as a mom and not as a vendor! I'll actually get to go to workshops and hang out with a friend who is looking for a Latin program. I will buy K14's next Math U See book. But after that, I'm done. I will simply enjoy people watching and watching my friend look at Latin and math programs.

Today was the girls' last day at Bible study. Okay, so we're losing one activity and adding about seven in two weeks. The rest of this month will be full of appointments - eye doctor, dentist, haircuts. Bought K14 a nice pair of Converses today. Am hoping to take the girls to Galveston next week to do some sightseeing and shopping.

Heat

The A/C went out in the store today, of all days. In the shade at Sonic, my thermometer read 105 degrees!

You know, I really think it's neat that in this country we stop for funeral processions. How respectful that is! Shame on those who refuse to stop for two minutes in their lives.!

Compliment

Today I received an interesting compliment. A customer said, "Oooooh, I like your fingernails! They're so unhomeschool momish!"
I don't have my camera with me, but my nails are the exact opposite of this picture here. Mine are sparkly white-tipped with a dark sparkly purple line.

I Just Love These OCD Cartoons!

I Miss My Kids!

K17 and K14 have been up at my mom and dad's since Thursday evening. R just left to go pick them up. Man, it sure is quiet around here without them!

It's been quite busy in the store today. Almost a bit more than I can handle by myself, but I'm trying.

Thursday night R took me to Olive Garden. Last night I cooked him one of his favorite meals, and we watched a new episode of Monk.

Guess what? I got my first online order today on the new website! Bad news is that I have none of the three items that she ordered in stock. Good news is that two of them should be coming in the first of the week. I'll have to order the third item today.

There are a lot of people in here right now, but no one is buying anything! Maybe I should hang a sign that reads "Browsing Not Allowed."

Cartoon Time Again!

My day

As school approaches, my days will get busier and busier. Today I took K17 to get her (we thought) entire toenail removed. Turns out, they decided to just remove the part of the toenail that was giving her problems in hopes that it will grow out correctly. This resulted in two injections into the toe. Why not do four injections and get it over with? Anyway, she did great!

Then I proceeded to work, where there was a pile of book orders waiting to be filled, which I cannot pay for. I went ahead and ordered them, with the prayer that the companies will give me some slack and let me pay later.

Tonight was supposed to be baked chicken night, but found out that K17 has a job interview with MOPS at 6:30. If she gets the job, she will have to be at work every Friday from 8:00 to 12:00. Can everybody say "No sleep-in day after all!"

We watched the last disc of 24 Season Four last night. All in all, pretyy anti-climactic (sp?) compared to the other three seasons.

So now our new school schedule if K17 gets the job will be as follows:
Monday: 8:00 - 1:00 school work. Travel. 2:00 - 5:00 volleyball practice in Conroe
Tuesday: 8:00 - 10:30 school work. Travel. 11:00 to 12:00 Algebra class Eat and travel 1:00 to 3:00 Writing class Travel Late afternoon; volleyball Finish school work at the store or at night.
Wednesday: 8:00 to 10:30 school work Travel 11:00-1:00 clogging Travel and eat 1:45 to 3:00 Science class Finish school work at store. K14 to choir practice at 5:00
Thursday: 8:00-9:30 French class 35 minutes away Finish school work at store all day until music lessons around 4:00 ish Late afternoon: volleyball game (not sure what to do about music lessons at this time. Will deal with it when it comes up.)
Friday: 8:00-12:00 K17 work 35 minutes away. Finish school work the rest of the day
Saturday: moving Jenny Craig to Saturday. Still unsure about when to fit therapy in. She is booked solid right now.

The top 5 advantages to being home schooled.
5. Get to watch TV during recess. 4. Get to wear jammies all day. 3. No banging chalk dust from erasers. 2. Teacher constantly interrupted by telemarketers. And the number one advantage to being home schooled:
1. No toting heavy weaponry all the way to the public school.

LOL. This will not be us. I've decided to call ours "carschooling."

Cartoon Time!

Customer Funny but not so funny

Today I had a customer call and ask me if I had any 8th grade math sets in stock. I asked her which publisher. She said it didn't matter. Then she asked me how much they were. I said that they are all different prices. So she said she's coming later today.

Now, I guess I'm just a bit too picky, but to me, it matters which publisher I buy from. Each curriculum is different. I would never pick a curriculum for my kids simply by picking the one that was prettier or cheaper than the others. I guess advertisers know what they're doing when they design a curriculum for shelf appeal. Don't parents realize that this is their kids' education? And what an opportunity, to be able to find a curriculum for your child that fits like a glove! I can't tell you how many times I have escorted a customer to the Alpha Omega shelf, and they say, "I'll take it," without even looking inside the box. Sooooooooo sad.

I have over 50 tubs of consignment to price. Going one at a time. And I have even more than that ready to pay at the end of their consignment.

Have done really well not stepping on cracks and lines the past two day. Ankles and hips are hardly sore at all!

Daughters are at a girls' conference all day today, and R is helping me at the store. He's learning how to check in Bob Jones books and put them away. Our sale was a success and we are able to pay rent next week. Today has been slow at the store. Only a few sales. Glad I don't have to pay R for his help! LOL

Well, the lady just came in and didn't look at anything. She bought Alpha Omega without even opening it because she had heard the name of it from a friend. She said that the child failed 7th grade math, but she bought 8th grade math. I advised her against it, and so did her husband. I guess she wears the pants in the family. She said she wanted books on horses for a second grader, which I showed her. I said that when the child reaches about the 3rd grade reading level that I suggested the Marguerite Henry books. She said, "Well, she's an excellent reader. Let me see them." When I showed them to her, she said, "Yeah, they're too hard." Why wouldn't she listen to me?

Operator: Thank you for calling Pizza Hut. May I have your national ID number?
Customer: Hi, I'd like to place an order.
Operator: I must have your NIDN first, sir.
Customer: My National ID Number, yeah, hold on, eh, it's 6102049998-45-54610.
Operator: Thank you Mr. Smith. I see you live at 1742 Meadowland Drive, and the phone number is 494-2366. Your office number over at Lincoln Insurance is 745- 2302 and your cell number is 266-2566. Email address is smith@home.net Which number are you calling from? Customer: Huh? I'm at home. Where'd you get all this information?
Operator: We're wired into the HSS, sir.
Customer: The HSS, what is that?
Operator: We're wired into the Homeland Security System, sir. This will add only 15 seconds to your ordering time.
Customer: (sighs) Oh well, I'd like to order a couple of your All Meat Special pizzas.
Operator: I don't think that's a good idea, sir.
Customer: Whaddya mean?
Operator: Sir, your medical records and commode sensors indicate that you've got very high blood pressure and extremely high cholesterol. Your National Health Care provider won't allow such an unhealthy choice .
Customer: What?!?! What do you recommend, then?
Operator: You might try our low-fat Soybean Pizza.I'm sure you'll like it.
Customer: What makes you think I'd like something like that?
Operator: Well, you checked out 'Gourmet Soybean Recipes' from your local library last week, sir. That's why I made the suggestion.
Customer: All right, all right. Give me two family-sized ones, then
Operator: That should be plenty for you, your wife and your four kids. Your 2 dogs can finish the crusts, sir. Your total is $49.99.
Customer: Lemme give you my credit card number.
Operator: I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid you'll have to pay in cash. Your credit card balance is over its limit.
Customer: I'll run over to the ATM and get some cash before your driver gets here.
Operator: That won't work either, sir. Your checking account is overdrawn also.
Customer: Never mind! Just send the pizzas. I'll have the cash ready. How long will it take? Operator: We're running a little behind, sir. It'll be about 45 minutes, sir. If you're in a hurry you might want to pick'em up while you're out getting the cash, but then, carrying pizzas on a motorcycle can be a little awkward.
Customer: Wait! How do you know I ride a scooter?
Operator: It says here you're in arrears on your car payments, so your car got repo'ed. But your Harley's paid for and you just filled the tank yesterday.
Customer: Well, I'll be a #%#^^&$%^$@#
Operator: I'd advise watching your language, sir. You've already got a July 4, 2003, conviction for cussing out a cop and another one I see here in September for contempt at your hearing for cussing at a judge. Oh yes, I see here that you just got out from a 90 day stay in the State Correctional Facility. Is this your first pizza since your return to society?
Customer: (speechless)
Operator: Will there be anything else, sir?
Customer: Yes, I have a coupon for a free 2 liter of Coke.
Operator: I'm sorry sir, but our ad's exclusionary clause prevents us from offering free soda to diabetics. The New Constitution our country started using in 2006 prohibits this. Thank you for calling Pizza Hut!

Terrific Thursday

Today was a pretty good day. My assignment was to not walk on cracks or lines. I did pretty well, but my hips and ankles hurt from doing it. I think I work muscles because I am resisting with my legs. I told y'all that I was going to continue walking on them because it's me and makes me unique. Not so, says my therapist. OCD changes you and tries to turn you into something you aren't.

Today was our Back to School Spectacular, and I just felt I would be too stressed watching all my merchandise disappear at 15 and 25% off. So I took the girls to a place called ITZ. We ate there, and the girls played arcade games. It's so nice to have fun with my girls.

Our website is finally up! Go to http://www.love2learnstore.com/ and tell me what you think. There are forums there, too, for all of you Chatty Cathys.

My friend, E, left a huge, purple ball in our backyard while we were out of town. Dusti is scared to death of it. She gets close to it and barks and then runs away and hides. What a hoot!

What's Going On

Yesterday I took dd17 to the doctor, only to find that our appointment time was an hour earlier, and they could not squeeze us in. UGH Reset the appointment for Wednesday because, well, the girls are just too busy. Later we went to the mall and dd14 bought her green IPOD. Then we went and had a nice visit with my grandmother. Last night dd17 and I watched the third disc of Season 4 of 24, while dd14 downloaded songs from ITunes.

Today both girls went to Bible study and then hung out at the mall with friends. It's the first time they've been "dropped off." Kind of scary for me, but you can't shelter them forever. They sure are growing up.

I am deeply saddened today that my friend, L, is putting her store up for sale. I had hoped and prayed that it would not come to that. I hope I don't follow her lead.

Two women meet at a playground, where their children are swinging and playing ball. The women are sitting on a bench watching. Eventually, they begin to talk.
W1: Hi. My name is Maggie. My kids are the three in red shirts --helps me keep track of them.
W2: (Smiles) I'm Patty. Mine are in the pink and yellow shirts. Do you come here a lot?
W1: Usually two or three times a week, after we go to the library.
W2: Wow! Where do you find the time?
W1: We homeschool, so we do it during the day most of the time.
W2: Some of my neighbors homeschool, but I send my kids to public school.
W1: How do you do it?
W2: It's not easy. I go to all the PTO meetings and work with the kids every day after school and stay real involved.
W1: But what about socialization? Aren't you worried about them being cooped up all day with kids their own ages, never getting the opportunity for natural relationships?
W2: Well, yes. But I work hard to balance that. They have some friends who're homeschooled, and we visit their grandparents almost every month.
W1: Sounds like you're a very dedicated mom. But don't you worry about all the opportunities they're missing out on? I mean they're so isolated from real life -- how will they know what the world is like -- what people do to make a living -- how to get along with all different kinds of people?
W2: Oh, we discussed that at PTO, and we started a fund to bring real people into the classrooms. Last month, we had a policeman and a doctor come in to talk to every class. And next month, we're having a woman from Japan and a man from Kenya come to speak.
W1: Oh, we met a man from Japan in the grocery store the other week, and he got to talking about his childhood in Tokyo. My kids were absolutely fascinated. We invited him to dinner and got to meet his wife and their three children.
W2: That's nice. Hmm. Maybe we should plan some Japanese food for the lunchroom on Multicultural Day.
W1: Maybe your Japanese guest could eat with the children.
W2: Oh, no. She's on a very tight schedule. She has two other schools to visit that day. It's a system wide thing we're doing.
W1: Oh, I'm sorry. Well, maybe you'll meet someone interesting in the grocery store sometime and you'll end up having them over for dinner.
W2: I don't think so. I never talk to people in the store --certainly not people who might not even speak my language. What if that Japanese man hadn't spoken English?
W1: To tell you the truth, I never had time to think about it. Before I even saw him, my six-year-old had asked him what he was going to do with all the oranges he was buying.
W2: Your child talks to strangers?
W1: I was right there with him. He knows that as long as he's with me, he can talk to anyone he wishes.
W2: But you're developing dangerous habits in him. My children never talk to strangers.
W1: Not even when they're with you?
W2: They're never with me, except at home after school. So you see why it's so important for them to understand that talking to strangers is a big no-no.
W1: Yes, I do. But if they were with you, they could get to meet interesting people and still be safe. They'd get a taste of the real world, in real settings. They'd also get a real feel for how to tell when a situation is dangerous or suspicious.
W2: They'll get that in the third and fifth grades in their health courses.
W1: Well, I can tell you're a very caring mom. Let me give you my number--if you ever want to talk, give me call. It was good to meet you.

Fall Schedule

Still no word from the web guys today. :o(

I am trying to have a good attitude today. It is sooo slow at the store again today. I think I have decided that stepping on lines/cracks and checking my phone should be okay with me and everybody else. If you don't like it, tough. It's me; it makes me unique.

Thought I would share the girls' fall school schedule with you. It's complicated.
Tuesday afternoons they have an essay writing class. Wednesday afternoons they have a science class. Thursday morning K14 (SHE TURNED 14 TODAY!!!!!!) has a French class. They have their music classes Thursday afternoon. I don't know if we're doing sewing this year, but K17 will start volleyball in August.

For schoolwork, here's what they will be doing:

Grammar - Easy Grammar, Daily Grams, Great Editing Adventure
Writing - writing class (one essay per week)
History - Beautiful Feet US & World History. They will also be doing daily timeline work using the books Under God and The History of US.
Math - their individual math programs
They read three chapters from their novel everyday
Geography - Trail Guide to World Geography (one country map per week)
K14 will also do Italics Handwriting.
K17 will continue with Driver's Ed
Vocabulary - K14-Vocabulary Cartoons; K17 - Wordsmart

My Assignment for the Day

My assignment for the day was to go to the grocery store and not to walk on cracks, lines, threshholds, etc. I felt like Jack Nicholson. I felt off balance, like I was going to fall. I don't know which looks sillier - stepping on them or not stepping on them. Between our home and town there is a stretch on the highway that has lots of horizontal cracks where the concrete was poured. I have noticed the last few days when I drive over the cracks I mentally "step" on each one.

A big chain opened a store in Houston, not too far from us, and had a big sale today. We have been sooooo slow lately (usually we are swamped this time of year), that we are going to have a sale of our own next Thursday - Back to School Spectacular to see if it will help us pay some bills that are piling up high.

No word from the website people today.

Here is an interesting article which I think sums up OCD pretty well in a short and simple manner. I have inserted where I fit into the spectrum.

What is OCD?
OCD is the fourth most common psychiatric diagnosis. The onset of symptoms is usually gradual, but some patients report a sudden onset. A few people recall a precipitating event, while others do not (me). Precipitating events can include emotional stress at work or at home (me), increased levels of responsibility(me), health problems and bereavement. Pregnancy, the birth of a child and termination of pregnancy may be linked to the onset or worsening of OCD symptoms.
The DSM-IV-R (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition) states that "the essential features of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder are recurrent obsessions or compulsions that are severe enough to be time consuming (i.e., they take more than 1 hour a day) (me) or cause marked distress (me) or significant impairment. At some point during the course of the disorder, the person has recognized that the obsessions or compulsions are excessive or unreasonable (me)." Adults usually realize their obsessions and compulsions are unreasonable or excessive, but children are not as likely to recognize this.
Obsessions are persistent images, impulses, thoughts or ideas that are experienced as inappropriate and intrusive, and cause marked anxiety(me). People with OCD have a sense that the thoughts are not within their control and not the kind of thoughts they would expect to have(me). We are able to understand that the obsessions are products of our own minds and are not imposed from without.
Trying to ignore the thoughts or impulses, or to neutralize them with other thoughts or actions, people develop compulsions (me). Compulsions are mental acts, such as repeating words silently(me), praying (me)or counting, or are repetitive behaviors such as ordering, checking (me)or hand washing. The goal is to reduce or prevent anxiety, not to provide gratification or pleasure. The person usually feels driven to perform the compulsion to prevent some dreaded situation or to reduce the distress accompanying an obsession (me). Compulsions are either not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent, or are clearly excessive.
Almost everyone worries, at times excessively. OCD is considered as a diagnosis if it interferes with one's life or causes distress. The worries of OCD are usually irrational. Ignoring them makes one feel anxious and nervous. Excessive worrying that is rational, but excessive, may be a symptom of depression. Many people are compulsive, but do not have OCD. They give careful attention to details and procedure. The compulsions of the people with OCD are useless, repetitive behaviors and are performed to dispel the anxiety that accompanies an obsession.
People with obsessive thoughts or compulsive rituals that are not distressing or particularly time-consuming may have subclinical OCD. They have OCD symptoms that are of concern, but are too mild to diagnose OCD. The same principles used to treat OCD may be helpful for subclinical OCD.

My OCD

My OCD has kicked into high gear for the summer. Every time I get rid of one ritual, another one seems to come along. Some of you know that I "check" my cell phone every 3-5 minutes, which seems to be a running joke right now with my friends and a pain in the butt for my family. Now, I've discovered that I'm stepping on lines and cracks. Don't know if this just started or if I just discovered it a few weeks ago. I hate it. It makes me look like a nincumpoop (sp?) walking through the grocery store.

On a nicer note, our website should be up and running SOON! As you know, we are five weeks behind schedule, and the guy says they are waaaay over budget. Hey, that's his problem. The good thing about coming up with a firm price at the beginning of this ordeal.

I had a nice, long chat last night with my friend R from Del Rio last night. She said something that totally surprised me. She said that I'm one of the bravest people she has ever met. R is not only a terrific friend but a GREAT counselor. I have learned soooooo much from her.

The girls are bored, bored, bored. I am ready for school to start so that we will have a schedule again. Although, I will miss sleeping in tremendously.

Hey, it's been a long time since I last posted. Just wanted to check in for a bit.

What was I Thinking

K13 was in a play last week called "The Night of January 16th." It was a courtroom drama, and K16 was chosen as jury foreman. LOL

I don't what I was thinking: I committed to reading the Bible in 90 days, and I am about 8 days behind! I have been working diligently on the new websitel I categorized over 5,000 items INDIVIDUALLY this weekl Next, I have 6,000 more items to catergorize and find and download pictures and descriptions for. How did I ever think I could read the Bible 45 minutes a day and do all this. Also, K16 and I joined Jenny Craig on Friday. I am starting to get tired of salads already. But knowing that the weight will eventually come off is a huge motivation. My OCD was really bad two weeks ago but seems to be tapering off this week. I haven't done CBT in about three weeks.

Next time, a quiz. Bye for now!

It's not what you do once in a while, it's what you do day in and day out that makes the difference.”

A New Adventure

My teenage daughter decides to take me “driving” to show me what she has learned in Driver’s Ed. I am sitting in the front seat, passenger side of our white mini-van, wearing a T-Shirt and blue pants. "How did I let her talk me into this?" I'm thinking. I am secretly wishing that I had my crash helmet and a pair of Depends with me for support. I lean my seat forward so that I can see the road and be ready to yell “Look Out!” when the time is appropriate. My heat is racing. While my left hand grabs on to the arm rest, I pray silently, “Please, Lord. Let this be over soon!” My right hand is clutching the handle above the door so hard that my knuckles have now turned white. Then my daughter starts the ignition.

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

Security

I am all caught up on consignments! YEA!!! But now I am BORED!

Went to my mom and dad's for Easter. Here's what we pigged out on: ham, asparagus with hollandaise sauce, stuffed peppers, fruit salad, scalloped potatoes that were undercooked (my fault), homemade rolls, green bean casserole with mushrooms. I'm sure I left something out. Oh, yeah, and pound cake with fruit for dessert.

My grandmother lives in a new apartment for senior citizens. One amenity which she pays for is security. To enter her complex you are supposed to key in a number on the keypad in order for the gate to open. Then, to get into her building you are to enter another number on the keypad near the door. Both times I have visited her, the gate has been wide open. (No need for a keypad #1) Sunday, when I went to enter her building, someone had put a large rock in the door to keep it ajar. (No need for a keypad #2) When I asked Grandma about the rock, she said that a lady puts it there when she goes to walk her dog. Now, how lazy is that? I mean, why can't she use the keypad next to the door like everyone else. It jeopardizes the residents' safety. I tell you, I felt like throwing that STUPID rock into the flower bed, right behind the bushes.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature.... Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Helen Keller (1880 - 1968), The Open Door (1957) (Not sure I agree with that entirely)

Mom24terrificgirls

I am now mom24terrificgirls instead of 42 because when I made my Google account, I made a typing error. That's why I wasn't able to sign in with my Google account.

I have received two online orders. Woohoo! Praise the Lord! Now I get to take my employees out for dinner!

I have changed my mind AGAIN about next year's science. Both girls will be doing Apologia General Science. That way, I only have one chapter to read and one list of vocabulary words and test questions to keep up with. I found two books and a solution manual in my resale area.

BIG NEWS!! Tuesday K16 took her learner's permit test and made a 95%! Last night I let her drive around the college parking lot for about 15 minutes. It was the longest 15 minutes of my life, but she did GREAT! Bought her a Sonic Blast to celebrate.

Book Elves

If a book falls off a bookshelf in a bookstore in the middle of the night, does it make a sound?

I find books on the floor all the time that have taken a nosedive onto the floor. What makes them do that? It's not like it's windy in the store. And I do believe that the longer an open book is upside down on the floor, the worse the crease. They should be picked up immediately! Remember the elves in the story of the Elves and the Shoemaker? Well, I want to hire a couple of book elves to look after the store at night. They would have direct access to two microwaves, a refrigerator, and a play area.

The above photo was the only decent picture I could find of an elf. You wouldn't believe what comes up when you google the word "elf."

I have now officially priced ALL of my consignment. The warehouse is clear for the first time since April 2006! I sold about 300 resale books this week! Just goes to show you that if the books are out there on the shelves, the customers will buy them!

Emily: We can't just throw him out in the snow.
Walter: Why not? He loves the snow. He's told me 15 times.

Buddy: We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.

Another Saturday

I made up a new word the other day - "lemonier." e.g. Lemon drops are lemonier than Lemonheads.

My girls' new favorite word is "random."

I only have 10 more tubs of consignment to price and I am CAUGHT UP for the first time since last April. It is a race to see if I can get it done before someone else comes in with a truckload.

Still no internet orders, but a friend from Dallas has some clients looking for Sequential Spelling, so we added those to the shopping cart. Maybe an order next week!

I think I am just about Monked out. Hey, another new word! We watched four more episodes last night, and I'm finding myself laughing less. We borrowed Season Two from K16's friend, T.

Well, the consensus from Teaching Mom and the Well Trained Mind is that K16 can do the Apologia Physical Science without doing the experiments since she doesn't need the lab credit anyway. We will still need to read over how the experiments are supposed to turn out.

The word random is used to express lack of purpose, cause, order, or predictability in non-scientific parlance. A random process is a repeating process whose outcomes follow no describable deterministic pattern, but follow a probability distribution.

Monk

I cannot sign on to blogger using my google account for some reason. I don't know what I'm going to do when they take the "old blogger" option away -- probably have to start a new blog.

Still no online orders. May I please bribe someone to order something to make me feel better?

The girls are on Spring Break this week. You know what that means -- staying up late every night watching Monk reruns. Unfortunately, our video store doesn't carry season two. It's strange to see someone on TV who has the same type of illness that I do. Sometimes I wonder if that's what I project to the world. (don't tell me if I do) I thought I hid it pretty well.

There is an organization called Exhale that is offering sympathy e-cards to woman who have abortions. Shouldn't the sympathy go to the fetus, not the woman?

Pet peeve for the day: People in the Sonic drive-through who order six bags of food and six drinks. They have stalls for that kind of order.

After a handshake)
Monk: No, no, no - bathroom! Bathroom! I - I - I need a wash...!
Sharona: Just try upstairs! Try upstairs!
Monk: Did you see that? It was a two-hander!

Saturday musings

I work all day on Saturdays. BLAH! Have priced tons of consignment today. Every time I open a tub, it's like Christmas -- seeing what people brought in. Someone even brought in a Mystery of History! Lots of Alpha Omega lifepacs, too!

My shopping cart is up and running, but I haven't made a sale yet. :o( I told the staff that when I get my first order I will take everyone out to eat. Right now we are trying to figure out an easy and fast way to tell the website at the end of the day what items we sold in the store. It is a complicated process that we're hoping we can get down to 10 minutes.

Tonight K16 is going to a youth group function. K13, R, and I are going to the mall for some serious shopping. Didn't go to Olive Garden last night because I wasn't hungry. Maybe tonight?

Been thinking about next year already. Here is what I have for K16 SO FAR!
She will be a junior.

Math U See Consumer Math
Easy Grammar for grammar review
Apologia Physical Science (can we do this without the experiments?)
Word Smart
Essay writing class (she also has to read literature for this class)
Driver's Ed
One country map per week

What am I missing? We do history read alouds and timeline work. She works out at the community college for P.E. She's already taken two years of foreign language.

No Title Today

Wednesday night I got hit in the eye with a raquetball. Cannot believe that my glasses didn't break! The eye is still sore and draining a bit.

Two days ago our shopping cart went online! No orders as of yet, but that's okay because we are still getting some of the kinks worked out. We started with 2300 items and will add new items weekly.

Tonight the girls are going to a movie night to see Facing the Giants, giving R and I some time to ourselves. Maybe I can talk him into taking me to Olive Garden for some pasta and salad!

This has to be one of the most DISGUSTING things I've ever seen - a Porky Pooper candy dispenser. I saw this at Jo Anne's Fabrics today! I would think one would find this maybe at a Spencer's Gifts or Hot Topic, but not at Jo Anne's!

Not So Motivated

I haven't done too well on my motivated moms planner. Tuesday night I left the planner at the store, so I couldn't do it. Last night I went and had dinner with my friends R and J at Jason's Deli. By the time I got home it was almost 9:00 p.m. Today is my late day at the store. Oh, well, I guess I'll have to make up for it on Sunday like I did last week. At least the stuff is eventually getting done. Isn't that the point?

Motivated Moms

A lot of you ask me how I do it all: run a business, homeschool, and run a home. Having OCD sure doesn't help. Well, lately, I haven't been doing a very good job of either. I have just purchased something that might help me get back on track. It's a yearly cleaning/organizing planner from motivatedmoms.com. It only costs $8, and you download it immediately. I purchased the half-size planner which fits inside my dayrunner. It reminds me to do little things like clean the trash cans and change my kitchen towels. It reminds me to do big things like clean my oven, mop my kitchen, etc. So far it is helping a lot. Thursdays, though, are going to have to be tweaked. There are too many items on the list that day. That is my late day at the store. I don't feel like cleaning my microwave inside and out when I get home at 8:30 p.m.

I have stopped teaching science. I was using Rainbow Science, and it was going fairly well even though I am not a science person. But we hardly ever get to it, so I am just going to make the girls take a science class outside of home for two years. Right now I'm searching for a class that uses Apologia, not easy to find.

Today is the Super Bowl, and we are having cheese dip and multi-grain chips, refried beans, and Spanish rice.

My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint. ~Erma Bombeck

Homeless

This week has been full of interesting experiences in town. Our bank was robbed yesterday morning before it opened. Wednesday we had our first homeless person in the store. She was obviously mentally ill, wearing her pajamas, a coat and hat, carrying a crutch and singing to herself. She sat in the store awhile, then asked to use the phone and asked the person on the other end for money for a motel room. When she was refused she put the phone down and started talking to the phone. At closing, she went outside and huddled by our door to escape the cold and rain. My friend talked to her awhile and told her there was a shelter nearby, but the woman replied, "I don't go to shelters. All I need is $53 for a room at the Holiday Inn." I guess she could have hocked that cool Ipod she was listening to or not have bought those cigarettes she was smoking.

Then Thursday a woman came into the store and said someone had bought her a gift certificate for $20, but she had lost it and she wanted us to honor it. She got really bent out of shape when she was told we could not do that. Most of the time we don't even see whom the certificate is given to. She said we should have gift cards and that we had made her already bad day worse. Hate to tell ya , lady, but if you lose your Walmart or Target card, they will not take your word for it and honor it. If Walmart won't do it, I won't.

Pet peeve of the day: I love my subdivision. We have deer, possum, ducks, raccoons, armadillos. We have nice neighbors. But yesterday as I was leaving my subdivision I counted 12 cars coming into it. I waved at each person, but only one out of 12 waved back. What happened to being friendly?

Customers

I LOVE it when a customer enters the store with a list and immediately picks up a shopping basket! I HATE customers with an attitude!

Saturday Thoughts

When I arrived at my office today, I was greeted with a sign on butcher paper, written by a child, which said "Love 2 Learn! The best bookstore ever." That really encouraged me. We have an art easel in the children's play area, and a child had left that sign for us. With the holidays over, I am overwhelmed, wondering how I am going to place orders, price consignment, work on the new website (which will now have a shopping cart), and homeschool. This sign was a real pick-me-up.

Yesterday at Kroger there was a lady in the expresss self-serve line with, I know, at least 30 items. She was holding everybody up. Why can't people be more considerate these days?

Pet peeve for the day: I LOVE talk radio, but why do all the stations have to break for commercials at exactly the same time? Makes surfing channels a useless waste of time.

Children seldom misquote. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said. ~Author Unknown

Pet peeve for the day: I wish automobile manufacturers would find a way to make seatbelts that don't hang out of the car when you close the door.
